Bracey Harris, 22, graduated from the University of Mississippi this month with a degree in broadcast journalism. While interning at The Clarion-Ledger, she told the story of a homeless man who was working toward a college degree. When the story ran, community members flooded phone lines with donations. It was at that point Ms. Harris realized her storytelling could make a difference.


Habari, a newborn black-and-white Colobus monkey, makes her debut at The Audubon Zoo in New Orleans.


Mariana Dale once woke up at 4 a.m. and drove hours to nab an interview with a cattle rancher about state funding cuts for drought relief. Ms. Dale says she likes making complicated issues “accessible to people.”



The New York Times Student Journalism Institute in New Orleans for 2014 is now concluded. We will resume in May 2015 in Tucson, Arizona.
